Description
The purpose of this course is to provide learners with knowledge
of the electric traction system and how to work safely in the
electrified territory to prevent injuries. This course will
provide Queensland Rail staff and contractors with a general
knowledge of the traction system and of the electrical related
risks and hazards that they may be exposed to during the course of
their duties.
IMPORTANT:
It is a mandatory regulation of RIW and Queensland Rail that all students attending QR SARC or WET have an RIW Card/Number prior to attending training. This means that students not able to provide an RIW Card/Number will not be able to commence training on that day and will be required to rebook and attend training on a date after they have acquired their RIW Card/Number.

What are the Entry Requirements?
To attend a Queensland Rail induction course, students must comply with the following entry requirements:
Students must have an RIW Card prior to attending this course:
- A new RIW Card application costs $250 + GST, which includes the first-year card subscription, an identification check and the RIW card.
- Please read the ‘How do I get a Rail Industry Worker card?’ page for further information on how to apply.
- Employed students can apply for their Rail Industry Worker Card here, or have their employer complete the application for them.
- Unemployed students or those seeking employment can register through the Rail Industry Worker Card Application Service Request.
- Please note: RIW card applications take approximately five business days for RIW to process.
Students must wear the following PPE to comply with assessment requirements:
- Safety boots or steel cap shoes
- Hi-vis, long-sleeved shirt
- Long pants, e.g., cargo pants
- Wide brim hat
What other induction courses do I need to do to work in the QR rail corridor?
You should always check the relevant QR Competency Matrix for the role you will fulfil when you work for QR, even if you are working as a contractor. You can find the most up to date Competence Matrices on the QR website here.
In most cases, you will be required as a minimum to hold the following:
Additionally, according to the QR Fatigue Risk Management for Contractors Fact Sheet, all Rail Safety Workers, high risk workers and shift workers must complete TLIF2010 Apply fatigue management strategies training.
