This training course is designed to give learners the skills and knowledge to perform Rail Corridor Protection Officer duties in the Queensland Rail network.
Note: Duties can only be conducted 3 metres clear of the Danger zone. RCPOs are not permitted to enter the danger zone or arrange track protection.
The course has been aligned against the unit of competency:
- TLIF0023 Conduct track protection assessment
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this course at the time of publication.
What are the Entry Requirements?
Students must hold the following competencies before attending the QR RCPO course:
- NHS Category 3 Health Assessment
- QR SARC
- QR Communications QNRP
- TLIF2010 Apply fatigue management strategies
- QR WET (Not required if working outside the electrified territory)

How long does it take?
The initial training is conducted over 3.5 hours, commencing at 8.00 am.
Students must then complete the in the field mentoring process over a minimum period of three months. This process requires the student to complete 3 events under the supervision of a suitably qualified mentor in the rail corridor (not in the Danger Zone). Upon completion of the 3 events, the student must ensure the mentor and their supervisor has signed all required fields of the Protection Officer Mentoring Logbook. Once the student has met all of the above requirements, they can make a booking to undergo the practical assessment.
