QR Rail Corridor Protection Officer (RCPO)

Description:

This training course is designed to give learners the skills and knowledge to perform Rail Corridor Protection Officer duties in the Queensland Rail network.

It is aligned to the specific requirements of Queensland Rail Network rules and procedures MD-12-189.

On successful completion, learners will have the following knowledge and skills:

  • Plan work in the rail corridor outside the danger zone.
  • Establish a worksite in the rail corridor.
  • Establish the best protection level required for workers and equipment for the worksite.

Note: Duties can only be conducted 3 metres clear of the Danger Zone. RCPOs are not permitted to enter the danger zone or arrange track protection.

The course is aligned to the following unit of competency:

  • TLIF0023 Conduct track protection assessment

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this course at the time of publication.

Duration:

Initial training and theory assessment: Half-day, 8.00 am – 12.00 pm, in a classroom and non-live rail environment.

Workplace-based training and mentoring: Requires 3 events and a minimum of 1 month of mentoring.

Final competency assessment: On completion of the on-job component, participants must attend an onsite competency assessment. This must be completed within 6 months of initial training.


Work Placement requirements:

This course requires participants to:

  • have the mentor record the participant’s progress in an On-Job Logbook.
  • receive workplace-based training in the job role from an experienced and qualified workplace mentor, while working in the rail corridor.

Entry Requirements:

This course may not be suitable for everyone. Students are required to:

  • already hold the following certifications and units of competency or an equivalent unit:
    • Safely access the rail corridor TLIF0020 – QR SARC (QNRP)
    • Use communications systems TLIE2007 – QR Communications (QNRP)
    • Apply fatigue management strategies TLIF2010
    • Working in the electrified territory – QR WET (not required if working outside of these areas)
  • have passed an NHS Category 3 Health Assessment required by Queensland Rail for the role of ‘Working in the Rail Corridor’.
  • have suitable employment to facilitate completion of the work experience component,
  • have an experienced and qualified workplace supervisor who can mentor the participant through the on-job events conducted in the rail corridor, outside of the Danger Zone.

Award Received:

If a participant successfully completes all training and assessment requirements of both parts of this course, they will receive:

  • Statement of Attainment – On successful completion, participants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the unit of competency.
  • Certificate of Achievement – On completion participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement for QR 3.10 Rail Corridor Protection Officer (QNRP).
  • Rail Industry Work (RIW) Card – On completion of the course, Go-Train will update participant’s RIW profile with the achieved certification. Please refer to the RIW website or contact us for further information.

Reaccreditation requirements:

Queensland Rail requires all holders of the QR 3.10 Rail Corridor Protection Officer certification to have their qualification re-certified every three (3) years, before it expires. If your certification has expired, you must complete the QR RCPO course in full.
