Description
This course is for learners who intend to perform non-destructive and ultrasonic testing duties on the ARTC rail network as an Ultrasonic Tester. It involves testing plain rail and field welds using ultrasonic equipment in accordance with rail industry standards, safeworking and regulatory requirements, and ARTC workplace procedures.
It includes determining test requirements, conducting testing using hand directed equipment, conducting visual examination and measurement of welds, identifying and classifying defects, and completing all required documentation.
The units delivered are:
- TLIS3010 Test rail using ultrasonic equipment
- TLIS3011 Test rail using non-destructive testing equipment
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this course at the time of publication.

Duration:
Initial training and theory assessment: Five consecutive days, 8.00 am – 4.00 pm, in a classroom and non-live rail environment.
Workplace-based training and mentoring: Up to 12 months.
Final competency assessment: On completion of the on-job component, participants must attend a one-day competency assessment at Go-Train.
Work Placement requirements:
This course requires participants to:
- receive workplace-based training in the job role from an experienced and qualified workplace mentor, while working in the rail corridor.
- have the mentor record the participant’s progress in an On-Job Logbook.
Entry Requirements:
This course may not be suitable for everyone. Participants must:
- be at least 18 years old at date of enrolment,
- already hold the following certifications and units of competency, or their equivalent:
- Category One Medical
- Prepare to work safely in the construction industry CPCWHS1001
- Safely access the rail corridor TLIF0020
- Maintain and use hand tools TLIB0012
- Shift material safely using manual handling methods TLID0020
- Participate in basic workplace communication TLIE1003
- Follow work health and safety procedures TLIF0025
- Apply fatigue management strategies TLIF2010
- Apply track fundamentals TLIB2085
- Apply environmental procedures to rail infrastructure TLIU2008
- Operate minor mechanical equipment TLIB2092
- Carry out track ballasting TLIS2030
- Install railway sleepers TLIS2031
- Install and repair rail fastening systems TLIS2034
- Carry our rail installation TLIS2044
- have suitable employment to facilitate completion of the work experience component,
- have an experienced and qualified workplace supervisor who can mentor the participant through the work experience and Logbook requirements.

Award Received:
If a participant successfully completes all training and assessment requirements for all components of this course, they will receive:
- Statement of Attainment – On successful completion, participants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the units of competency.
- Certificate of Achievement – For ARTC Ultrasonic Testing.
- Rail Industry Work (RIW) Card – On completion of the course, Go-Train will update participant’s RIW profile with the achieved certification. Please refer to the RIW website or contact us for further information.

Currency requirements:
From 1 July 2026, the validity for ARTC Ultrasonic Tester certification will change from 5 years to 2 years. All rail workers who currently hold this qualification or are working toward obtaining the ARTC Ultrasonic Tester role will be affected.
Existing holders of the ARTC Ultrasonic Tester role, should check the expiry date of their certification to make sure that they will be able to meet this new requirement from 1 July 2026.
