Turnout Construction course

This course consists of 5 units of competency from the Certificate III in Rail Infrastructure qualification. These five units are a requirement for people who want to work as a Turnout Constructor – Concrete and/or Timber, as per the Rail Industry Worker – National Roles for Track and Civil.

This course is designed for Track Certifier/Examiners who want to further their career in rail construction.

Go-Train Industry Pty Ltd offers this 5 day program for skilled workers. It is a quick, yet comprehensive course designed for people who are employed in the rail industry and can complete on-the-job logbooks to record their progression in the required skills and knowledge.

Operators of mechanised equipment must have undertaken training and, where appropriate, hold the relevant licence, permit or certificate and be recognised as competent for the class of machinery being used. 

Units of competency:

  • TLIB3095 Check and repair points and crossings
  • TLIS0001 Construct and assemble points and crossings
  • TLIS0002 Install and maintain surface track and drainage
  • TLIS0003 Install turnouts
  • TLIS3026 Implement track maintenance and construction

Duration:

Initial training and theory assessment: Five consecutive days, 8.00 am – 4.00 pm, in a classroom and non-live rail environment.

Workplace-based training and mentoring: Approximately 6-9 months.

Final competency assessment: On completion of the on-job component, participants must attend a one-day competency assessment at Go-Train.


Work Placement requirements:

This course requires participants to:

  • receive workplace-based training in the job role from an experienced and qualified workplace mentor, while working in the rail corridor.
  • have the mentor record the participant’s progress in an On-Job Logbook.

Entry Requirements:

This course may not be suitable for everyone. Students are required to:

  • have evidence of holding the qualification: TLI27121 Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure – Track Work or an equivalent qualification with equivalent units.
  • hold the Track Certifier/Examiner National Role competencies:
    • TLIB3094 Check and repair track geometry
    • TLIB3099 Examine track infrastructure
    • TLIB3100 Visually inspect track infrastructure
  • have access to a workplace and suitably qualified workplace mentor to complete on-the-job logbook requirements.
  • be able to bring your own Personal Protective Equipment for the practical assessment.

Award Received:

If a participant successfully completes all training and assessment requirements of both parts of this course, they will receive:

  • Statement of Attainment – On successful completion, participants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the units of competency.
  • Rail Industry Work (RIW) Card – On completion of the course, Go-Train will update participant’s RIW profile with the achieved certification. Please refer to the RIW website or contact us for further information.
