Description:
This course is for Queensland Rail employees or contractors who are required to perform the role of a Lookout when lookout working is being used as a protection method for a worksite.
This course is aligned to the specific requirements of Queensland Rail Network rules and procedures MD-12-189.
- On successful completion, learners will have the following knowledge and skills as they relate to their job role:
- Describe the roles and responsibilities of a Lookout.
- Explain how Lookouts communicate to other parties when in the rail corridor.
- Explain and communicate the minimum sighting distance through a Prestart Safety Briefing.
- Explain what a Lookout can and cannot do, in different parts of the network.
- Advise workers to clear the track.
- Acknowledge the rail traffic whistle.
- Stop rail traffic in an emergency.
The course is aligned to the following unit of competency:
- TLIF0027 Perform lookout duties
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this course at the time of publication.

Duration:
Training and assessment: One-day, 8.00 am – 3.00 pm, in a classroom and non-live rail environment.
Work Placement requirements:
There is no workplace placement requirement for this course.
Entry Requirements:
This course may not be suitable for everyone. Students are required to:
- already hold the following certifications and units of competency or an equivalent unit:
- Safely access the rail corridor TLIF0020 – QR SARC (QNRP)
- Apply fatigue management strategies TLIF2010
- Working in the electrified territory – QR WET (not required if working outside of these areas)
- have passed an NHS Category 3 Health Assessment required by Queensland Rail for the role of ‘Working in the Rail Corridor’.

Award Received:
If a participant successfully completes all training and assessment requirements of this course, they will receive:
- Statement of Attainment – On successful completion, participants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the unit of competency.
- Certificate of Achievement – On completion participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement for QR 3.4 Lookout Working (QNRP).
- Rail Industry Work (RIW) Card – On completion of the course, Go-Train will update participant’s RIW profile with the achieved certification. Please refer to the RIW website or contact us for further information.

Reaccreditation requirements:
Queensland Rail requires all holders of the QR 3.4 Lookout Working certification to have their qualification re-certified every three (3) years, before it expires. If your certification has expired, you must complete the Lookout Working course in full.
