Trainee Train Driver School

Locomotive Train Driver career pathway

This course is suitable for persons wanting to become a Locomotive Driver
Second Person or Train Driver Assistant and ultimately a Locomotive Driver.

There are many entry points to becoming a Train Driver – Second Person, which
depend on the Rail Operator you are working for. However, the core components
of the training and the units of competency required to become a Second Person
remain the same.

The overall learning process (which includes your on-the-job work experience)
can take anywhere from 9 months to 5 years depending on your exposure,
capabilities and employer.

Each component (called ‘stages’) is a pre-requisite for entry into
the next stage of the GoTrain Train Driver school. You can participate in any
stage of the GoTrain Train Driver school, as long as you have done the
previous stage (and your training is still current).

GoTrain has relationships with several Labour Hire companies and Rail
Operators, and organise a meet and greet session during your training. Some
Labour Hire companies interview participants for potential employment on
completion of the course, for roles such as a Trainee Second Person.

This initial connection, combined with the GoTrain Trainee Driver School,
increases your chances at a successful career in the Rail Industry.

This course is completed in stages with Stages 1, 2 & 3 completed prior to
employment and then Stage 4 being completed once you are employed in the
industry.

The theory components of Stages 1 and 2 of the course are delivered in our
training rooms, Stage 3 practical training is delivered on site in a
supervised training environment.
