Description
This is a general qualification for a person engaged in basic operations within the rail infrastructure environment. It involves undertaking a range of tasks involving known routines and procedures, and taking some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.
Please Note:Â We recommend students complete the unit: ‘TLIF0020 Safely access the rail corridor’ before enrolling in the full qualification.
This course contains 6 core units of competency that all students need to undertake, they are:
- TLIF0025 Follow work health and safety procedures
- TLIF2010 Apply fatigue management strategies
- TLIB0012 Maintain and use hand tools
- TLID0020 Shift materials safely using manual handling methods
- TLIU2008 Apply environmental procedures to rail infrastructure
- TLIE1003 Participate in basic workplace communication
On completion of the core units, students need to specialise in one stream below.
Stream A – Track Work
- TLIB2085 Apply track fundamentals
- TLIF0020 Safely access the rail corridor
- TLIB2092 Operate minor mechanical equipment
- TLIS2030 Carry out track ballasting
- TLIS2031 Install railway sleepers
- TLIS2034 Install and repair rail fastening systems
- TLIS2044 Carry out rail installation
Stream C – Track Surfacing
- TLIB1093 Clean equipment and worksite
- TLIB2001 Check and assess operational capabilities of equipment
- TLIB2085 Apply track fundamentals
- TLIB2091 Measure and record track geometry
- TLIF0020 Safely access the rail corridor
- TLIS2030 Carry out track ballasting
- TLIC2058 Travel medium or heavy self-propelled on-track
equipment, OR - TLIC0010 Propel and operate light on-track equipment
To complete your qualification, you must then choose 3 additional units. These can be selected from the speciality electives above, or the general electives below.
The general electives you can choose from are:
- TLIB2097 Install and maintain rail guards
- TLIB2121 Maintain rail joints
- TLIG0003 Work effectively with others in a team
- TLIK2010 Use info-technology devices in the workplace
- TLIW0007 Operate under track protection rules

Duration:
This course will take 410 – 450 hours, including on the job experience.
Entry Requirements:
This course may not be suitable for everyone. Participants must:
- be at least 18 years old on enrolment,
- undergo a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to identify current LLN skills level,
- ideally, already hold the following certifications prior to enrolling:
- TLIF0020 Safely access the rail corridor
- Category One Medical
- be seeking or already have suitable employment to facilitate completion of the work experience component,
- have an experienced and qualified workplace supervisor who can mentor the participant through the work experience and Logbook requirements.
Work Placement Requirements:
This course requires participants to:
- receive workplace-based training in the job role from an experienced and qualified workplace mentor, while working in the rail corridor.
- have the mentor record the participant’s progress in an On-Job Logbook.
