The Engine and Air course with Stage 3 Practical Training is the next step you need to take to become a Locomotive Driver Second Person or Train Driver Assistant and ultimately, a Locomotive Driver.
The course covers Stage 2 & 3 of Driver Training and follows the training plan set out for TLI42615 Certificate IV in Train Driving, which is the qualification you will achieve if you finish all of the requirements over a 24-36 month period.
In its entirety, the Cert IV in Train Driving is completed in four stages. Stages 1, 2 & 3 are completed prior to employment and take place on consecutive days over a five week training period. Stage 4 of the training is then completed once you are employed in the industry.
This Engine and Air course, with Practical Training, forms Stages 2 and 3 of the Cert IV in Train Driving.
Stage 1: NSW Systems of Safeworking certification:
You should have already completed this certification.
Stage 2: Engine and Air: Trainee Loco Driver: Tuggerah NSW
This stage covers the following units of competency:
- TLIB3019 Test train braking system
- TLIB3026 Prepare for train operation
- TLIB3075 Inspect and prepare a motive power unit
- TLIB3118 Apply awareness of railway fundamentals
- TLIB4078 Carry out a train roll by inspection
- TLIB4079 Conduct a general brake examination
- TLIB4081 Provision a motive power unit
- TLIF2018 Operate firefighting equipment
- TLIC3027 Stable a motive power unit
- TLIC4074 Shunt, couple and uncouple rail vehicles
- TLIB4080 Identify, diagnose and rectify minor faults on motive power units and rolling stock
Week 1: Monday 30th November – Friday 4th December
Week 2: Monday 7th – Friday 11th December
Stage 3: Practical Training: Goulburn NSW
Week 3: Monday 14th – Friday 18th December
Stage 4: On-the-job Logbook
24-36 months of on-the-job experience and completion of a Logbook.
What are the pre-requisites?
You need to have successfully completed the NSW Systems of Safeworking certification, have evidence of Second-Person currency or achievement and have the unit: TLIF2080 Safely access the rail corridor. You will also be required to obtain a Category One Medical prior to commencing, so that you can complete all of the unit requirements.
What do you receive on completion?
Successful completion of Stages 2 and 3 leads to a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment from the Transport & Logistics Industry Training Package. Once you have achieved this, you are able to apply for positions as a Locomotive Driver Second Person or Train Driver Assistant.
When you finish Stage 3 training, you will be issued with a logbook to record your on-the-job experience, working as a second person or driver assistant.
Once you have completed this logbook you would be able to begin the workplace requirements for training and assessment in Stage 4 of the course. On successful completion of Stage 4 over 24-36 months, you will achieve a Certificate IV in Train Driving (TLI42615).
