Description
The Safeworking Level 1 training course is about managing track vehicle movements on the ARTC Defined Rail Network in NSW.
This course contains 4 core units of competency that all students need to undertake, they are:
- TLIC0084 Access rail track to travel track vehicles under manual block working
- TLIF3058 Apply safeworking rules and regulations to rail functions
- TLIW3026 Operate stand-alone signalling-points equipment
- TLIC0016 Identify and respond to signals and trackside signs
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this course at the time of publication.

Duration:
Initial training and theory assessment: Four consecutive days, 8.00 am – 4.00 pm, in a classroom and non-live rail environment.
Workplace-based training and mentoring: Approximately 6-9 months.
Final competency assessment: On completion of the on-job component, participants must attend a one-day competency assessment at Go-Train.
Work Placement requirements:
This course requires participants to:
- receive workplace-based training in the job role from an experienced and qualified workplace mentor, while working in the rail corridor.
- have the mentor record the participant’s progress in an On-Job Logbook, which will take approximately 120 hours.
Entry Requirements:
This course may not be suitable for everyone. Students are required to:
- already hold the following units of competency, or an equivalent unit:
- Safely access the rail corridor TLIF0020
- Prepare to work safely in the construction industry CPCWHS1001
- Perform handsignaller duties TLIF2082
- Perform lookout duties TLIF0027
- Operate under track protection rules TLIW0007
- Pilot rail traffic within work on track authority limits TLIC0025
- Clip and secure points TLIW2037
- Use audible track warning devices TLIF2097
- have been deemed competent to work as an:
- ARTC NSW Handsignaller Level 2
- hold a Compliant Certificate of Fitness – Category 1
- have suitable employment to facilitate completion of the work experience component,
- and have an experienced and qualified workplace supervisor who can mentor the participant through the work experience and Logbook requirements.
